What do you think is killing the scene?

Over the past few years the modified car scene has changed.

The forums are not as busy, alot of clubs have closed their forums and it appears that not as many people are modifying their cars as they were a few years ago..

When the Fast and Furious films were released it created a big hype.... Talk about media influences..

What do YOU think is slowly killing the scene, or in fact DO YOU think it is slowly dying ?

Very true. As an ex Ripspeed manager I saw the Max Power generation grow into the F&F generation and store product lines changed accordingly.

With a general downturn in interest outside the scene (no recent F&F films, bad publicity and chavs making it worse) the market has dropped off bigtime.

A friend is the main buyer for Halfords PLC (Ripspeed) and she says they are backing out of the performance parts slowly and moving into ICE/Media in a big way.

Big 4x4's, Mercs and MPV's are taking over as the F&F generation (those that spent and spent and spent) are becoming adults with mortgages and sprogs.

Rims, lowering, tints and ICE is where its at.

also it does not help when top mags are not that inteterested in the club scene other than exposing the idoits who screw it up for the others + the mags are like the bibles to some folk and when they wont shoot a car that has not had less than 50k spent it kinda ruins peoples morale etc

As 90% of other problems we have .... Chavs! .... Most large or unusual bodykits are considered chavy because of backyard bodykits popping up on corsas and novas .. Cheap sound systems again in the usual older cars corsas mainly making the propper stuff look shabby ....

Personally since the f&f films ive loved modyfied cars and think i always will ... If the scene dies then it does ... just means that there not true modifiers ....

I personally think it's become a lot less socially acceptable to be a "car modifier" in recent years, plus the fact that insurance seems to get more and more crippling, so the true enthusiasts can't afford to do a great deal to their motors when they're young. It's almost as though there's no proper next generation coming through.

*insert witty remark here*

Maybe the clampdown against "boy racers" and anti-social behaviour in recent years has played a part. The chances of getting in the poo becasue you have a loud exhaust have gone up, so prehaps a lot of people jsut don;t think its worth it.

As has already been mentioned, a lot of people have "moved on" with mortgages kids etc so either cannot afford to do it anymore, or invest thier money in other things.

For example, around 20% of my wages dissapear into my daughters bank accounts every month, before i spend anything else on her. Added up over the course of a year thats a few thousand i could've thrown at getting a decent car and tarting it up.

i think it has alot to do with the police and crack down on that

the price of things eg insurance and also the price to have done thats a killer

and also the mags as the cars in them have had alots and lots spent on them

ive not been in the scene long at all but i think its changed in a year

I wouldn't say not as many people are modding. I would say allot of people now got to dedicated sites for the cars e.g. imoc for mr2's

Plus the whole scene is very strong down here more of jap cars than anything else. I think you have allot of problems in the midlands because you have allot of chavs and it's a small town.

We have allot of car meets away from the center and the police seem not to mind (they even come and have a look sometimes).

I think like people have said before, the max power generation have to buy houses bring up kids etc and their lives are more dedicated to them.

Found out the other day that the average age of the max power reader is 16!
