Time for a new car... I think, anyway.
Hello people.
Its been playing on my mind for a while since my Subaru came out of the body shop. Im getting ready for a new car.
Im looking to have 5 - 6k to spend but im in a dilemma. What do I want next.
I have 2 options for the cash I should have...
Option 1: An Evo 6/7.
4wd beasts, then I can say I have had both a Subaru and an Evo and settle the undying battle of the rally slags for myself.
Option 2: Nissan Skyline.
Not sure what spec yet coz I know nothing about em really. BUT they are RWD drift machines, with a fair bit of power.
Now here is where it gets complicated. Im used to the blistering 4wd, 4000rpm launch capabilities, being able to get from 0 - fast in no time at all, leaving some more powerful cars stood spinning at the lights. I would not like to go back to 2wd 'launch lag' waiting for wheels to grip and the turbo to spin up once the engine speed has dropped. Which is pushing me towards the Evo.
But I would like powerfull RWD drift machine.
Can anyone shed any light on what skylines are like for grip off the line and roadholding (without getting the back end out). And help me weigh up the pro's and cons?

P1 would be cool, without LOTS of miles on.

that is a fair point there nez, if your gonna sell yours to buy another, why not just tune yours.....
if ya can get one, a 3 door type R would be good....
my mate has a type RA and i drove it a few week back, pretty impressive, its running 320bhp and i think it may be up for sale soon.....

I would say start with a better base model like a STi, tuning a UK Impreza aint cheap. Its cost me loads to get mine to 300, wish I'd have started with an STi. Stronger engines, better suspension, stronger gearboxes. And if you get an RA there pretty light for the size. GC8's are fairly light anyway I think, 1250kg is what they're supposed to weigh which isn't bad. RA's are 100kg lighter.
I would go for a Skyline, but for the money I'm not sure you will find a decent GTR unless its an R32. If its a GT-S your after, you can find a really good one for that sort of money.
You thought about an RX7?? There pretty good if you dont mind high running and maintenance costs.
Quick edit, just done some googling. STi RA version II is 1200Kg and a normal one 1235Kg so not much difference.

RE: Time for a new car... I think, anyway.
I'm not overly convinced that the ability to "race away from traffic lights the fastest" is a sensible basis to choose a used car on but, anyway........
Skylines are great, but if it's ultimate grip then it has to be the GTR which appears to be out of budget. The GTS-T is a really good car, but the main problem now is finding one that's not been raped from arse-hole 'til breakfast time and if you get a rough one then the bils can spiral fast.
I'm a big fan of the Pulsar, they're very under-rated yet if you get one that's had the chocolate gearbox sorted and some decent stoppers they can can give any Evo or Impreza a run for it's money. For your budget too you'd probably get a really nice one with a FMIC, better brakes and maybe even a bigger turbo etc. As with the Skyline though, there are a lot of dogs about so it may take a while to find a good one.
Does it have to be Jap? What about an E36 M3? They're quick, they handle great, they come with an LSD for kicking the arse out and they're a lot better equipped than 90% of Japanese stuff. Worth considering.
*insert witty remark here*
