RE: Time for a new car... I think, anyway.

I had a Saxo before my Subaru, so im on the right path then.

Another idea I have had is to stick some slightly bigger wheels (18") on my Impreza to possibly lift it half an inch or so, coz the problem I am having with it, is that its too low, and it bounces off the ground at any given chance it gets. I only need a tiny bit more clearance for it to be drivable again. BUT i have also been told that fitting 18" wheels to a classic impreza can alter the handling for the worse, but dont quote me on that, its what ive been told.

Strip out the seats (front and rear) and fit some new front seats, possibly P1 STI ones. Maybe leave the back ones out, because they are pointless now. If anyone sits in the back, again, it scrapes. BUT, if i leave the back ones out, is it going to look daft, coz its a 4 door. Cage perhaps? I dunno.

I have loved this car since the moment I got it. All it has cost me in problems is a MAF sensor and a caliper bolt. and thinking about it, I dont really want to sell it. But the drivability factor at the minute is very low. Its an effort to go anywhere.

What do you think?

RE: Time for a new car... I think, anyway.

the bigger the wheels the crapper it will handle

my 2 is on 17's but handles alot better on 16's i know this as i had to borrow a mates set of 16's whilst i had my old ones refurbed!

Bigger rims will also add more weight- so whilst stripping the rear seats- your adding bigger rims and tyres which will make up some weight your trying to loose! Icon_smile

why not adjust the ride height to compensate the boucing of the suspension! that way you wont be killing your arches and will feel noticable handling changes.

Cars like these need proper suspension and wheel set up to gain the best from what its made for! a grands worth of teins on my car changed its handling considerably! now all she needs is an alignment and camber adjustments with the new wheels and shes ready to go Icon_smile

if your on the scooby forums- then check it out and ask for advice- im not too hot on scoob technicalities but theres always principles whatever the car Icon_smile

How is it lowered at the minute then? If it's just via springs have you considered coilovers? Instead of splashing out on new rims and tyres bang a set on (if you haven't already) and then you can adjust the ride height in the matter of half an hour or so to suit anything. Plus you get the benefit of superior handling in comparison to the standard tackle.

keep the scoob mate you got loads more horses to get of it yet.get the bigger turbo TD05 on it front mount , headers and sti injectors. decent remap close to 300 and maybe abit more.

i have to disagree about bigger the wheels crappier the handling as long as the height is right and some proper tires. it should be just as good more rubber on the road more grip?

Alot of time attack scoobys on scooby net run on 18's.

if that method was true m3 and r35 gtr will be coming in 16's Icon_rolleyes

The difference is mate that the M3 and R35 were designed from the offset for 18" rims, it was all factored in to the original suspension design; on the classic Impreza i wasn't. Plus the fact that the R35 for one has an immensely more advanced suspension system.

A lot of Time Attack cars may well run on 18's, but I guarantee none will be doing it on standard shocks and springs. If you've got a full set of coilovers and alignment compnents then yes, 18's will be great handling-wise.

Truth is though, that Time Attack cars are for competition use and one trip to the shops in one of the pro cars would probably pop your hip out thanks to the stifness of the ride. Being able to lap Oulton Park in 50 odd seconds is great, but if it's a pain in the arse on the street then what's the point? The fact is that 18" rubber will have a lot stiffer sidewall than the equivalent 16 or 17 inch counterpart which gives less compliance and cause a lot more vibration and load to be transmitted in to the suspension and chassis. The net result is a twitchy and uncomfortable car.

Lol, did it bollocks, you couldn't wait to get a Saxo! Icon_lol If more important things came first then you'd have got a cheap shitter to roll around in for a while instead of fannying about painting rocker covers and adding stickers! You got a Saxo 'cause you is chavee mate yo! ha ha

RE: Time for a new car... I think, anyway.

The suspension is not altered at all. The body has had bumper extensions and side skirts put on (...awaiting hale of roof tiles) which make it too low to drive.

Speed bumps = No.

Hmm, that's a difficult one then, I take it you're not up for altering the bumpers and skirts after all the bodywork then? I know what it's like to have a pain in the arse low car; my Camaro had a twin 4" system front-to-back and the mufflers were forever catching to the point where back seat passengers were a no no and speed bumps used had to be avoided at all costs! Looking at the pic, I'm not sure another inch of rimmage would help that much, not without a stupid-looking fat sidewall.

RE: Time for a new car... I think, anyway.

Thats EXACTLY what its like.

See the problem I have now? It is a definate pain in the arse. I really dont want to alter the bodywork coz it cost me a fortune.

Bigger rims could be an option, but as I said earlier it could really damage the ride. Failing that though, without altering the bodywork I don't know what else to suggest other than airbags or hydraulics! A set of Tein Super Street coilovers are reasonably priced and would give you an adjustable ride height...worth a look.

Because it sounds like a pain in the arse to go anywhere, a car is no fun if it's not practical enough to clear a speed bump or a kerb. I've been there and it can be a right pisser at times.

I'd have to want one before I could find one mate ha ha, if I wanted a shopping trolley I'd pay a quid and nick one from Asda Icon_lol

Cheers but I need to save all my football related enthusiasm for the upcoming Blue Square season I'm afraid mate, I haven't got any spare for a smaller club like F**est! Icon_lol Icon_razz

As for the Spac-so I believe my first words were something along the lines of; "what the fu.." ha ha.

Anyway, barring coilovers and raising the ride height a little I'm not sure what else to suggest apart from buying that Pulsar!
