Thats right as reported this month Martin Hadlands Rayland Escort has cracked 200mph!!
Finally at Bruntingthorpe Proving ground he ran 200.2mph the First escort ever ofer the 200 mph barrier
His first run suffered badly when he had a rear tyre blowout....at 178mph!!!

i would imagine that at those speeds the down force would be huge so reomoving the spoiler would possibly give less down force allowing the car get those extra few mph but making the car less stable ?

I think whay you have said is right, making the car less anchored down will make it less stable but i assume it is using that force to go forwards rather than down!

Wow, spot on....I've always loved the Reyland Escorts.
Yup, got it in one about the downforce; all spoilers create drag, and drag increases at the square of speed. Basically it takes 8 times the power to go twice as fast....so if you could do 100mph with 100bhp, it'd take 800bhp to do 200mph. Obviously, the more efficient you make the car aerodynamically, the less power is sapped by trying to cut through the air.
I bet at 190+ removing the drag of the wings and mirrors would free up over 100bhp....probably more.
