Usually a coolant leak or head gasket when that happens. Have you checked the coolant level?? Check the radiator and header tank for the fluid level and also see if there's any oil in it....it'll be easy to spot if there is, it'll look like a rainbow. Also have a look on the under side of the oil filler cap....if it looks like salad cream then it's more than likely to be head gasket.

When you refilled the cooling system how did you do it? (I'm presuming you've swapped the thermostat).

Temperature sender wouldn't stop the heaters warming up though, and usually the temp gauge in the cluster would stop working too.
Does sound like head gasket to me too but if there's no trace of oil in the coolant then it's difficult to say.
Make sure that both the radiator and header tank levels are correct....sometimes the header tank can be full but the radiator's empty!

RE: new car again lol
is it pressurising?
I had a frontera that would pressurise the header tank so it lookedlike there was water in it, but ther was nothing in the block.
