New backbox at last
I've been looking at replacing the factory VW backbox on the truck for a while now, but the lack of choice has mean't that its literally rotted away in the process.
Its held on by two big brackets and mounts to a 3 bolt flange at the inlet end. The inlet has basically rotted all the way around and as such its sounded like a cross between a moped and a Tiger tank for the last month, using fuel like mad and generally being annoying.
Last week I found an aftermarket backbox that fitted between the brackets at Auto Cruise. Its a bit bling with a 4" exit and anodised blue can but today I went to B&M and had an adaptor tube made (took them an hour and they were brilliant) to my dimensions to mount it between the flange and the backbox. It fits like a glove and after some swearing the new backbox is on. Its hardly visible but the sound, well - the sound is awesome!
Little children will be scared.
It sounds like a cross between a Scooby and a Tiger tank now - and without the wheezy noises inbetween. You have to hear it (and you will!) to know what I mean but it roars.
Best bit is it came in at £55 with the adapter - that's £65 cheaper than a shitty, heavy copy of the gay sounding, gay looking VW box.
Modifying rules!

RE: New backbox at last
Sun is out,so I thought this morning I would take some pictures.
Unfortunately a m8 (slysicars - I owe you a drink or few mate) called to let me know some wankers had tried to steal the truck last night and he could see the window smashed in.
They have done the window, tried to brealk the steering lock and the sterring wheel has snapped off instead (good old VW!).
Damage consists of:
Drivers door glass and seal
Wind deflector
Instrument panel and pod
Steering wheel
Ignition loom
Steering column surround
Camera stolen (and yes, it was hidden under the seat in a locker)
Its now gone into 'safe' storage so the insurance can assess the damage but in all likelihood they will probably say its 'beyond economical repair' due to the rarity of the parts/age of vehicle.
Might have to claim it back as salvage if thats the case and repair it myself but the daft thing is I could repair it myself for about £150. Ho hum - just means I have got to get the Golf ready regardless next week.

RE: New backbox at last
Update!
After mass pestering of the insurers the truck has been declared a CAT C writeoff.
Basically that means it would cost them too much to fix it as finding new OEM parts (rare) would be a costly , time consuming nightmare.
Writeoff sounds bad news but all this means to me is there is a note on the file saying it was broken into and the insurance paid out the full value of the car, rather than repair it.
The good news is that I have opted to buy the truck back and take a rop in the insurance payout. The market value is a few (secret) grand and the buy-back value was only 1k so I am quids in. The repairs will only cost £100-£150 to me so all in all it worked out nicely.
Should cover the respray and some mods and pay off some bills too. WINNER!
