Insurance and modifications -

I've been doing a little excersize for a editor who works for a couple of magazines. He gave me a couple scenarios for different cars and different age groups. He wanted to know which was better, to buy a 2002 206 GTi with induction kit, bigger wheels and lowered 35mm or buy a standard 2003 Jag X-type AWD 3000 V6. Both for a 25 year old and a 50 year old. There was a few other scenarios but basically all the same outcome.

Anyway I found a couple of things out that might interest you all.

When I rang a couple of insurers we use regards the mods on the 206 most of them were fine with the induction kit and even the wheels as long as they weren't too extreme (like BigCab), for both age groups. But as soon as I asked about the lowered suspension, nearly all the companies I spoke to shut the door in my face. It was difficult to insure the 50 with all the 3 mods but for 25 year old it was near on impossible.

The quote for the 50 year old (on the details given by the editor) went from a premium of £383.50 on the standard 206 GTi up to a staggering £760 based on a modded GTi, with the quote for the Jag being just £488.00. His question was answered straight away. BUY THE JAG!!!

The quote for the 25 year old was almost the same story, it went from £652 on the standard 206 upto £1500+ with a massive excess as soon as the mods were declared. The quote for the Jag was high at £1600 admittedly but compared to the slightly modded 206 it a fuckin bargain. I'd have the Jag everytime.

It makes you wounder why we bother with these modded cars when we can go and buy something propper and pay a lot less insurance for it. I know Clare could insure a Cossie or Skyline for less than BigCab. I'm sure Max-d could save some money too if he sold the MG and bought something else, anything else, I recon Concord would be cheaper than what he's paying for the MG. lol.

## The one thing I did find, Insurers don't like lowered suspension, so if you have lowered you car and tried to be clever and NOT told you're insurer's then you are asking for you claims to be refused - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED ##

Jess is right. To coin a phrase from Chubby Brown, 'Split-arses' do get it cheaper. A lot cheaper sometimes.

RE: Insurance and modifications -

Insurance is a right minefield - you can get all sorts of varying quotes from different insurers even if you're giving the same details!!!
A lot of people I know use Tesco as they are cheap but they wanted 1500+ for me on the 2. A.Flux is under 600 with absolutely everything declared!!
If you have a modded car and you dont notify your insurers of exactly what you have done to it - IMHO you are an ass. As you prob know Alanman they are much stricter on the inspections now and if they can find a way not to pay then they won't - and your up shit creek without a paddle as any undeclared mods will void your insurance!! Even more costly if you are covering the cost of someone elses repairs!!
