MyBB  Golf Syncro motorsport prep

Following a period of madness on here and Ebay I was going to buy an old Porsche to prep for motorsport.

Luckily someone on here gave me a dressing down about my numerous unfinished project cars and suggested I sort them before anything else.

Now I have a car sat here doing nothing. Its a Mk2 Golf Syncro 1.8 4dr - thats a 4wd, 1.8 carbed model for those that don't know.

Is it practical to modify it for motorsport?

I know the extra doors add weight and the sunroof isn't ideal (at least its a steel one) but if I strip it out, lighten what I can and uprate the suspension, brakes and give the engine some more horses I think it might be a good trackday/sprint/drag car.

The 4wd setup really is fantastic and takeoffs are so much better than most 2wd cars I have driven with no torque steer or scrabbling - just traction. That and it grips like a limpet on corners.

Thoughts and opinions please......

Be pretty cool if a 20v T dropped in.

i rekon with a 16v engine from another mk2, or even a more powerful mk3 would be a good start!

i see no reason why it couldnt be a relitivaly quick track day car.

go for it!

Already looking for bits on Ebay.

Here is a temporary spec. Please feel free to help me refine it.

Engine:
TBA

Transmission:
Golf Syncro 4wd with Rallye Motorsport gearbox. Uprated driveshafts and new bearings

Brakes:
G60 280mm crossdrilled and vented discs and EBC Greenstuff pads
EBC Greenstuff rear shoes and new drums (rear discs are a waste as 90% of the braking on a FWD car is done at the front)
Bumper mounted brake duct vents

Steering:
Momo steering wheel
Quickrack

Suspension:
G60 top mounts, 2.25 coilover shocks, Rallye A/R bars, adjustable A arms

Safety:
6pt (FIA approved) rollcage, fire extinguisher, bucket seats, race harnesses

Wheels and tyres:
15" BMW E30 BBS with 195/50R15 tyres or 16" Compomotive MO with 195/45R16 tyres

Other measures:
Stripped interior, Aluminium/CF door panels, Fibreglass bonnet/Tailgate, Race mirrors

I agree, but £££ will be the initial problem.

I need to research the various conversions. The car is N/A non-injected at the moment so any upgrade using injection will necessitate wiring and at the very least a new fuel tank.

If i can get the weight down to say 850kg or less then it should make it go even quicker.
