can some one explain
can some one explain the difference pieces to do with suspension, like the springs, the bit that goes threw them and what are coilovers...im not a big tecky person an i have new clue what each bit is, so can some one explain

Your car has something called McPherson strut suspension on the front.

The strut is the long tower-like part going from the back of the wheel up into the wheelarch.

This comprises of:

The stub axle/hub (the pivot the wheel/brake disc spins on)
The strut body (the external body that hold the shock absorber and spring in place)
The shock absorber (a gas/oil filled cylinder that slows down the frequency of the bouncy when you hit a bump/pothole)
The coil spring (the coiled metal device that softens the shock through the chassis when you hit a bump)

Basically the spring absorbs the shock, the shock absorber controls the bounce.

This will all be connected to the car at the bottom through a metal/alloy arm called a control arm/track control arm or bottom wishbone - depending on how your arms were designed.

On the rear its the same (though sometimes the rear shock is outside the spring) and the control arm can come sideways or towards the rear (in this case its known as a trailing arm).

Some cars, such as Pugs, Saxo's etc do away with the rear springs and have a piece of sprung metal between the rear arms. This acts like an elastic band under tension and is known as a torsion bar.

Coilovers are basically a more compact form of suspension strut. They can be bought in different strengths and can be adjusted to suit different styles of driving.

you want if you can afford the coilovers alot of time ajustable so you can higher/lower your car(pretty easy really) your car will handle alot better on coilovers aswell compard to the just springs

Std suspension on any cars a compromise-manufacturers have to find a balance between comfortable and good handling (even on a performance car)so they`ll appeal to everyone be it the old dude down the road or a 17 yr old boy racer

The car can be made better either way be it at the expense of its opposite ie will handle mint but chances are ride will be harsher ie a gti model(or equivalent=harder shorter springs and firmer shock absorbers coupled with different antirollbars = less body roll on corners)

or made more comfy ie lower models in a cars range = crap handling due to sitting higher on softer suspension etc

If you want/need flexibility buy coilovers however still dont believe on a road car theyre absolutely necessary just cool as theyre adjustable in every way however still wont = a mint handling car

Look at it this way springs supplied are gonna be a compromise of whats best between the highest and lowest positions not designed for a specific ride height though you can specify spring ratings if you know what youre after usually.

buy a proper top adjustable suspension set with normal struts/springs with a set lowered amount ie -40mm the dampers are tuned around that ride height when designed aswell as the spring rates you only need adjust the damping so to me are more likely to get a better handling car in the end-my cars hard riding however most of the cars ive been in with coilovers have had coilovers bought as to minimise arch/ground clearance hence have to be set fairly hard on the dampers-this is not a good handling car just a low one.

In the end if youve got a showcar (without hydraulics) an thats all ya want flexibility then fine but ive yet to go in a coiloverd car thats even half comfortable.
