It catches oil coming out the breather on your crankcase and collects it in a little pot
Helps keep intakes etc clean of waste oil, supopose you can also see how much oil your losing out the breather
most used on turbo and high rev cars
Hope that helps

Just wondering if its worth getting one, as the corsa is being turned into a proper track day car.

Can get em cheaper off eBay if you want a fancy shiney one, but as Ant says, you can just use a bottle. Normally crankcase and rocker breathers etc, vent back into the induction pipework of your car, burning the oil vapours in them which is supposed to be kinder to the environment than venting them to atmosphere. Not as good from a performance point of view though, so the catch tank is fitted and the vapours enter it and the oil collects in the bottom and the gasses escape through a small breather filter on the catch tank. The hole left in the induction pipe is then blocked up with a bung, or a different pipe is fitted altogether.

I always thought they were to show you when your vacuum pipes had split as all the oil it catches over the years just sprays all over your engine in one go hahahhaha lol
