as above and add a reason why.
Bloody hell, tough one that mate, there's been so many! I'm tempted to say MkII Astra GTE 16v, there was next to nothing on the road in it's day that could match it within about £30,000 of the price! That said the handling isn't that brilliant. Pug 205 GTI is an obvious one too and arguably the best executed of them all, but I'd probably go with the Phase 1 Williams Clio if my arm was twisted....purely because shoving a 2 litre engine in such a small car was so out of this world in '92 and everyone raves about the handling. I read a road test not long back sticking one up against the new Clio 197 and despite losing ground on the straights the Williams actually faired better (as far as the driving experience goes).

There are plenty more options; Nova GTE, Fez RS Turbo and RS1800, Paxo VTS, Mk1 Golf GTi, R5 Turbo etc etc....it's pretty hard to choose.

If I had to have a hot hatch myself though it'd be an AE86 Levin Icon_cheesygrin
1) Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI - The greatest car ever to wear a GTI badge.

2) Renault 5 GT Turbo - Weighed fuck all and had a turbo. Would have been my best but the disposable fag lighter engines and all the spaghetti piping means it's no.2

3) Peugeot 106 Rallye - Proof that steel wheels are cool
Saxo VTS - cos I have one
Thats a difficult one to answer as I havent driven all the best hot hatches around, have to agree with Ste though, the best one I've driven so far is a 205 GTi, proper gave me big grins and handled awesomely.

To coin a favourite phrase of mine:

Volkswagen invented the GTi, Peugeot just made a better car to stick the badge on
original rice rocket crx
that car invented the term hot hatch
im not gonna be like ant and say my car is BUT as lee has said the clio williams 1 was so forward in its time that as he said is more than capable to still mix it with the best curremtly.

I beleive the term hot hatch was termed at the time the mk1 golf gti was launched.

in my opinion:

1. mk2 golf gti 16v - because it was just as much fun as the mk1, but with loadsa extras.

2. 1.9 205 gti - its just obvious, iv never met anyone into cars that wouldnt have one.

other faves of mine are, nova gte, mk1 astra gte, polo g40, glanza turbo.
Yeah, I don't think anyone can deny that the Mk1 Golf GTI was the first "hot hatch" really, although wasn't the Mk1 Fiesta SuperSport around before then? As well as the R5 Gordini? Like I say though, Zee German car will always be regarded as the first of it's ilk.
i think number one has to be the mk1 golf gti but im biased anyway

i cant really narrow it down but a choice few would be (very simular to whats been said really)

nova gte , 205 gti , clio williams , 106 ralle , mk2 golf 16v (very underated everyone needs to drive one at some point) polo g40, 309 gti (again doesnt get enough credit)

if im honest i wasnt as impressed as i thought i would be when i got my hands on a 180bhp rst or a 150bhp starlet turbo i reallly did hope for more from both of them
I recon the originals are the best, 205 Gti 1.9, Mk1 Golf Gti, MK1 Astra GTE, but as I'm a little bias the best of the best as got to be the Escort Mk3 for me in any form:

XR3
XR3i
RS 1600i
RS Turbo

I've had a couple of XR3s and more XR3is than you can shake a stick at and I grew up WANTING and NEEDING to have one and when I did finally get one I was not disapointed and I've never got bored of them, even now. They're the easiest engine ever to work on and maintain. Load of aftermarket goodies and still looks the dogs now.

Alanman
wasnt being serious bout it inventing that name lol
was just expressing my opinion lol

Other good ones

S2 106 Rallye cos drove a couple o those now and there a hell of a lot of fun, just chuck em in a bend and worry about goin round it later lol, proper drivers cars, never really bin a fan o the S1 (apart from the Roland Garris one wi the leather in it)

Swift GTI, one o those beat me down the strip, went like fuck looked like shit lol
al speaks the truth, KR engine mk2 golfs are the buisness, 139bhp out of the box, and feckin love to be revved hard!

im not sure if the mk3 golf gti 16v makes it. 150bhp from the ABF code engine, with 170bhp easily from an exhaust system and a set up, when vw designed the ABF it made over 170bhp, so was de-tuned so it didnt make the (pretty poor) vr6 look bad.
