I don't think the MkIII can make the list....far too fat and slow to be a true hot hatch.
to be honest mate i cant agree with you more about the mk2 gti 16v BUT i really would rather drink my own piss than spend hard earned cash on a mk3 gti after that one laura had i would never buy one, it was piss poor and was soooo unreliable (it did look nice tho Icon_smile )
1 of the first "hot hatches"

Does an AMC Gremiln count? ha ha Icon_lol
Clio V6 Icon_wink

Bit biased here but i've always wanted one since i first seen it come out. I love it for its insanenous and character. I actually like the impracticality of the car aswell lol. Okay it may not be the safest, best handling car to throw about but the noise of the engine behind and people stopping to stare and take photos does it for me. Its a supercar for not supercar money i reckon
The Clio V6 definitely takes the "most insane" award yeah Icon_lol

Not sure it can be in with the best of 'em though due to the handling, although the phase 2 is said to be a lot tamer.
nah i'd never own a mk3 golf either, to be fair, they are utter shite. id rob the ABF engine for a nice mk1 or mk2 golf conversion though Icon_biggrin
just look at the sig pic Icon_biggrin

Hot hatches were cheaper end of market with good performance - at around 30k when new the Clio V6 doesn't really fit in the category in my eyes (although a stonking car none the less). If we talking that sort of money then surely the Escort Cossie is king?!

For me its got to be 205 GTI 1.9. Had a 1.6 but couldn't afford the 1.9 - it was still rapid and I was only 18 at the time....probably my fav car have owned (after the current one!). Would love a 1.9 even now....just can't justify the cost (and would probably barely use it!)

defenatly not a 306 rallye Icon_wink

**Yawn**

I must say i have always loved clio V6 yet to drive one...

there seems to be alot of hot hatchs really...

Not sure if these can count but:

Renault 5 Turbo 2:

205 T16:

Or even a Lancia Delta:
Your all forgetting the first two hot hatches,
The Lotus Sunbeam, and the HS/HSR Chevete
Turbo`d - pulsar/sunny gti-r -Good all rounder for the time it were released.

non turbo -Pug 205 1.9 gti (my overall choice)

To be honest like loads of cars from this era and earlier for different reasons some were really fast, others handled well, some looked the part more than others etc.

R5GT turbo is definately worth a mention however can never remember how well a std one went-guessing pretty poor as all the ones down town bk in the day were 200bhp and above-guessing std they werent great-at 200bhp when they were good they were very good however reliability took the piss,a couple of me mates had them an were loads of trouble both regularly threatening to set fire to em.

Think the best hot hatch ever has to be quick/handle/be cheap to maintain and reliable 205 were all of these. Its rare you buy a car in factory spec ya could live with in every way but bk in the late 80`s early 90`s think it were pretty perfect.

Cars are just too heavy and smooth now to be fun (imo the driving experience has been took and just left ya with performance trust me they dont go hand in hand-a fast car aint always a fun car)
i would not say the 106/306 rallye, not very fast.

but i would deffo say the 205 gti as number one.

or the metro 6R4 for deffo if that counts?
