A spool's a mechanical device to lock up the diff rather than welding it up. 99% of drag cars use them, and they're quite popular with drifters across the pond.
mmmm that sounds a good idea ive not heard of them before that maybe worth looking into
a spool isnt a mechanical device to lock up the diff

its just a gear - the centre is solid

The larger section bolts to the ring gear and the shafts slide in each side. I'm pretty sure either Mark Williams or Strange Engineering will do a Skyline one....worth a search I s'pose.

It's not a gear at all....it bolts to the existing ring gear....making it a mechanical device.

well the research i dug up was a gear with a solid centre ie spool

so we are both right, or cant you take that?

and ok

its not a mechanical device to lock up the diff, it is a solid gear (where available )
Can't I take it? What? If you want to get in to a piss-fest be my guest.

No it's not a gear with a solid centre at all, it's a completely seperate unit independant of the ring and pinion (like the picture above!!!). The spool unit itself is retro-fitted to the existing ring gear and lets both half-shafts slide in to a common spline which "locks" the diff.

So no, it's not a solid gear, and yes it's a seperate device (or component if we're being a pedant about it). Yeah, by fitting one the diff unit becomes a solid unit, but the part itself is additional to the gear assembly.

I fitted one about a month ago, as I have done regularly for the past 9 years.
its not an assembly, its a part that fits into an assembly

Erm...........

That's what I've already said??
yawn

anyway happy, this spool looks very simple.

if anyone has a liner or above mentioned diffs that are the same as the liner, give it to jody or me and one of us will model a spool up and could get them made. i can get them made from EN36 and have them tufftrided but i doubt it will be cheap by any means.

anyhow, just hand one over and im sure we can work something out
