Read about this earlier, it must've been quite harrowing for the guy that listened to the pilot on the radio say "we're going down, we're going down" and then silence.

I'm a qualified pilot myself and whenever you hear a "Mayday" or a "Pan,Pan" (both emergency calls) it gets you're hole puckering!!
Air Traffic controllers do have a nasty job when it comes to this part of the job - I looked at doing it myself when I changed jobs but it is very high stress environment and the pay isn't all that great (around 18k a year to start iirc) considering the responsibility they have on their shoulders.
