"Back in the 1980s, three cars ruled the hot hatch streets - VW's Golf GTi, Renault's 5 GT Turbo and Peugeot's 205 GTI. They all fought admirably for the title of King Hatch, and whilst I hold super-fond memories of all three, it's the Mk2 Golf GTi that did it for me, having owned one for the last ten years. I love its simplicity - the lack of technology means I can feel every bit of the steering, the suspension and brakes."

got end 2 mixed up Icon_wink

the MK2 Golf is a dream to drive though, I have driven many different cars and theres just something about the MK2 that does it for me

God know what it would be like driving one with a 1.8T in it Icon_smile
Having owned 2 out of 3 of these cars I can only truly comment on 2 of them.

MK2 Gti - Heavy steering for me but would DEFFO have another one
R5 GT Turbo - Fun but so not my bag, didn't enjoy it at all.
205 Gti - I would have given my right arm for one of these when I was a teenager, and would probably have one now given half the chance, even having NEVER driven one. I think they sound mint and still have a good retro look.

I don't know why when designing the new golfs, VW still keep making them bigger, I say back to the old school, just hopefully learning from what they did with the beetle and what BMW did with the Mini...................or are they better left in the past as Icons?

I've had all 3 (and a few of them).

Mk2 Golf GTi - Good, but not as good as the Mk1 IMO (though the 16v engine was an improvement). A bit clodlike around the corners due to the bigger body but stylewise - still an iconic car.
R5 GT turbo - Good but the interior trim sucked. Headgasket failure a speciality. I loved my old Raider though.
Pug 205 GTi - Prefer the 1.9 (better power, better wheels) but I hated doing the head gaskets (bloody french!) because of the inlet/exhaust setup and limited space. I loved the Rallye too.

I reckon they missed out the Fiesta XR2. Maybe not as fast as any of the above, but you can't deny they're as tough as old boots and arguably just as much fun to drive as the Mk1 GTi. Bang for buck-wise they were much cheaper to tune up too. A definite mainstay for the 80's

I can only comment on the 205Gti after having 2 of them.

Awesome fun, the torsion bar rear suspension setup made for excellent handling. the 1600 engine was revvy and fun but ultimately the 1900 was the model to own.

No doubt they will gain a true classic status in years to come.

I wish I still had my white one Icon_sad

Yeah I agree!

I think to a certain degree, all 4 cars discussed have acheived some sort of retro iconic status already, I would even dare to say that everyone has a special place for any one of those cars, I bet everyone dreamed of owning one or more of these cars when they were younger....................well people in their 20's - 30's at least!
